The early years of the AI boom were dominated by Nvidia, with its graphics processing units that excel at training and running large models by the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic. But nearly four years after the launch of ChatGPT, users have embraced new agentic apps like Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots, and chip rival AMD has found a massive growth opportunity. Agents are run primarily off of virtual machines, powered by the central processor, where AMD, Intel and others have a lead over Nvidia.
