President Donald Trump has pledged to be "very nice" to China in any trade talks. Trump told reporters in the White House that he didn’t anticipate a “hardball” negotiation with Beijing. Separately, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the tariff standoff cannot be sustained, and that both China and the US will have to find ways to de-escalate in the very near future.
