In February, the construction sector recorded more than 400,000 job openings, up 16% month over month. President of The American Welding Society & Owner of Rochester Arc + Flame Center Michael Krupnicki joins Market Domination Overtime to discuss how the younger generation is becoming more interested in filling the demand for blue collar work.
Krupnicki reports that across the country there is "large demand" for welders: welding is tied to 50% of the country’s GDP, he says, from aerospace to agriculture, construction defense, and energy. Demand is buoyed by the Biden administration’s emphasis on infrastructure and by the repatriation of America’s chips manufacturing business, Krupnicki adds. The American Welding Society estimates that in each of the next five years, America will need 82,000 new welders to enter the workforce to keep up with existing demand.
As the founder of a welding school, Krupnicki sees primarily young people in their twenties entering the trade. He explains that those called to welding may just be coming out of high school or college, realizing traditional education did not work for them, or even white collar workers tired of working behind a desk.
