President Donald Trump is seeking "immediate negotiations" on acquiring Greenland for national security reasons, saying NATO owes it to the US to grant it full rights to the Arctic island.
Trump ruled out the use of military force, but insinuated that he would weigh Europe’s response to his demands when considering the US commitment to NATO going forward, saying "you can say yes, and we will be very appreciative, or you can say no, and we will remember."
Trump argued that the US needs full control of Greenland because it is critical to the deployment of his "Golden Dome" missile defense system, and that it would be impractical to safeguard land not under US control.
