David Hale, former US ambassador to Jordan and Lebanon, discusses the Trump administration’s plan for peace between Israel and Hamas as talks are held between negotiators in Egypt.
A key sign of progress in the talks, taking place in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh, will be whether Hamas frees all the roughly 20 of its live hostages — plus the remains of those who are dead — in return for Israel releasing about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
Trump had said initial talks over the hostages had already begun and he thinks they will be freed “very soon,” with the US president denying a report that he snapped at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for being “negative” about the deal.
Hale talks the potential for a release of hostages and what it would mean for Israel to pull out of Gaza.
