The Federal Reserve is in focus this week ahead of the US central bank’s latest decision on interest rates on Wednesday. Furthermore, the topic of Fed independence has been making headlines as Fed Governor Lisa Cook challenges President Trump’s move to replace her with nominee Stephen Miran and the administration floats potential candidates to replace Chair Jerome Powell, including Fed Governor Chris Waller.
StoneX senior advisor Jon Hilsenrath and S&P Global Ratings global chief economist Paul Gruenwald come on Market Catalysts to discuss how the Fed could best maintain independence and avoid policy mistakes if the president is successful in replacing Powell.
Also, the Federal Reserve is expected to cut interest rates at its FOMC meeting this week, with Wall Street pricing in a cut of 25 basis points following the latest labor and inflation data.
Yahoo Finance Markets and Data Editor Jared Blikre, who also hosts Yahoo Finance’s Stocks in Translation podcast, breaks down the central bank’s strategic reasons for rate policies, why the Fed may be behind the curve around rate cuts, and key indicators to monitor amid rate cuts.
