President Donald Trump holds a multilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders on Monday in Washington, as his administration attempts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine in their war’s fourth year.
United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are being joined by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
EU leaders meeting Trump on Monday are looking to bring Washington on the side of Ukraine. The European cohort includes heads of state who are close to Trump.
“The objective is mainly to support Zelenskyy,” a senior EU diplomat, who did not want to be named due to the sensitivity of the topic, told CNBC on Sunday. “The idea is to make sure [Trump] has the same objectives as Europe.”
The same diplomat outlined: “Our main objectives are: security guarantees, stop the killing and go for a trilateral meeting.”
