The US-Israeli attacks on Iran have triggered a regional crisis, with at least 1,230 people killed in Iran and dozens more elsewhere. At the same time, the war has increasingly dire implications for energy security across the globe – and perhaps even Donald Trump’s political prospects at home.
Exchanges of missiles, bombs and drones have continued unabated since the war began on Feb. 28. Rather than simply targeting Israel and nearby US bases for retaliation, Tehran has taken aim at American allies themselves while refusing to back down in the face of wave after wave of strikes.
With traffic in the Strait of Hormuz at a standstill, oil prices near $80 a barrel and no offramp in sight, the prospects for the Middle East, and consequences for the rest of the world, appear darker with every day of fighting.
The same may go for Trump’s party. The US president’s decision to go to war, the differing justifications offered by his administration for doing so and the widening cycle of violence could do damage to Republican efforts to retain control of Congress come November.
