A bold gamble by the Japanese Prime Minister has paid off in spectacular fashion, with Sanae Takaichi securing the biggest ever parliamentary majority for any post-war leader in Japan. It’s an extraordinary reversal of fortunes for the Liberal Democratic Party, which lost control of both houses of parliament just seven months ago.
Meanwhile UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership hangs in the balance, despite sacrificing his right-hand man over the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson. Morgan McSweeney resigned as Starmer’s chief of staff over the weekend, saying he took "full responsibility" for advising the Prime Minister to hire Mandelson as US Ambassador, despite his ties to the convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
