European natural gas prices extended their year-to-date rally to around 50% as liquefied natural gas export capacity from the US declined on the back of a massive winter storm. An Arctic blast cut nearly 10% of US production and drove up heating demand, adding to a jump of as much as 19% in the country’s natural gas contracts as traders were caught off guard by the scale of the disruptions in key export hubs such as Louisiana. European futures tracked US gains, with unseasonably cold conditions expected in northern parts of the region during the next two weeks.
