Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said security forces have "full control" of the country after two weeks of violent unrest.
President Donald Trump said Washington is mulling potential options in response to reports of deadly crackdowns on Iranian demonstrators, and an Iranian government official reached out to the president’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
Protests in Iran erupted on Dec. 28 after a sudden collapse in the value of the currency, and have resulted in more than 540 people being killed and over 10,000 arrested, according to the Human Rights Activist News Agency.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed to reporters Monday that an Iranian government official reached out to Witkoff “expressing a far different tone than what you’re seeing publicly.”
Leavitt also said Trump had spoken to Elon Musk about how to help restore internet communications in Iran, which have been restricted by the regime in a bid to curb the demonstrations. Trump on Sunday floated Musk’s Starlink service as a way to address the issue and told reporters he planned to call the billionaire to discuss the matter.
