    NYC Subway and Bus Fares Set to Rise Again

    The New York City MTA has proposed hiking the base fare for subways and buses from $2.90 to $3.00 starting in January. Tolls for bridges and tunnels would also go up. The transit system is facing a $1.1 billion deficit starting in 2027. MTA Chief Financial Officer Jai Patel says polls show customers are satisfied, crime is coming down, and fare hikes are small and predictable. Patel also talks about mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s proposal to make buses free and how they’re fighting fare evasion. She speaks on Bloomberg Businessweek.
