Hostilities between Israel and Iran entered a fourth day on Monday with no sign of easing, stoking fears of a wider war in the oil-rich region.
Iran fired several waves of drones and missiles over the last 24 hours, while Israel continued hitting the Islamic Republic’s capital, Tehran, killing one more senior military official.
Since Friday, 224 people have been killed in Iran, according to the government, which said most of the casualties were civilians. Iranian attacks killed 23 people in Israel, according to an official in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, and injured more than 400. Investors tempered the risk-off positioning that was triggered by the hostilities, with oil wavering and stocks staging a tentative rebound. As traders increasingly anticipate that the conflict between the two arch adversaries will remain contained, S&P 500 futures rose 0.5%, pointing to a recovery after the US benchmark shed more than 1% on Friday. European and Asian stocks also gained.
