President Donald Trump signed a proclamation to implement a 25% tariff on auto imports and pledged harsher punishment on the EU and Canada if they join forces against the US, expanding a trade war and triggering threats of retaliation. “What we’re going to be doing is a 25% tariff on all cars that are not made in the United States,” Trump said. Hours later, Trump suggested further tariffs would be imposed on the European Union and Canada if they worked together “to do economic harm” to the US. The reaction in currency markets including the euro and Canadian dollar was muted. Meanwhile, European leaders are trying to carve out a role for themselves in US-led ceasefire talks over Russia’s war in Ukraine as more than 30 of them gather Thursday for an impromptu defense summit in Paris. Ahead of the summit, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a new package of €2 billion ($2.2 billion) in military aid to Kyiv and said leaders would address how to strengthen Ukraine’s army, which would still remain the main line of protection in any kind of peace settlement.
