President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hit back at Donald Trump’s misleading remarks about the Ukrainian leader’s approval rating and suggestions that Kyiv started the war, accusing the US president of living in a Russian “disinformation space.”
Tension escalated a day after senior officials from the US and Russia met for a first round of talks over the war in Ukraine, leaving Zelenskiy isolated and compounding fears that a deal to resolve the war will be reached without Kyiv’s involvement.
Trump followed up on Tuesday, telling reporters he would “probably” meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the end of the month. The president asserted that Zelenskiy’s public support was at 4% — a level belied by all available polling — and mentioned that wartime Ukraine hasn’t staged an election, a demand that’s been made by the Kremlin.
Bloomberg News senior writer Stephanie Baker examines why Russia appears to be gaining some favor with the White House. Stephanie speaks with Tom Keene and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg Radio.
