US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denied President Donald Trump was betraying Ukraine by opening talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. European leaders blindsided by Trump’s call with Vladimir Putin insisted they shouldn’t be sidelined after the US president said that he’d agreed to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine with his Russian counterpart, sweeping aside three years of US policy. Trump revealed the conversation on social media, saying the two had a “lengthy and highly productive phone call.” He said their teams would start negotiations immediately, and later told reporters in the Oval Office that he’ll probably meet Putin in Saudi Arabia in the “not-too-distant future.”
