Football’s biggest night is finally here! Super Bowl LIX kicks off this Sunday evening in New Orleans with the Kansas City Chiefs facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles in an epic rematch that is bound to be a game for the history books. Will the Birds come out on top or will the Chiefs “three-peat” and win the championship for the third year in a row? This week on Yahoo Finance Sports Report, host Joe Pompliano breaks down everything about the Big Game for football fans and investors alike and covers all things having to do with the financial side of the NFL championship. Ticket sales down from 2024 Tickets for Super Bowl LIX will cost attendees a pretty penny, but prices will not break the bank as much as they did last year when the Chiefs played the 49ers. Pompliano says that according to ticket reseller TickPick, the cheapest tickets for the big game are running for under $4,000 a piece and the actual get-in price for this year’s game is 50% less than last year. While ticket prices are low, rates for hotels in New Orleans have skyrocketed. Sports betting up from 2024 Pompliano predicts that sports betting on the Super Bowl will increase this year from 2024. The American Gaming Association reported that approximately 68 million Americans wagered over $23.1 billion on last year’s game, which was a 44% increase from 2023. If this trend continues, these numbers will be even higher in 2025. Halftime Show In this week’s Deeper Dive, Pompliano looks at the economics behind the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Presented by Apple Music (AAPL). Not only does the tech giant pay $50M annually to sponsor the 13-minute performance, but they also pay the performer – in this year’s case Kendrick Lamar – $15M for a production budget. While the artists themselves do not get paid, it’s a genius way for them to get exposure. For example, while brands will pay $8M this year for a 30-second commercial, Lamar will get 13 minutes of air time for free to promote himself, which is incredibly valuable. Pompliano uses Usher and Rihanna’s performances at previous Super Bowls as case studies, breaking down how the artists’ halftime shows led to increases in their respective music sales. Plus, Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law Executive Director and friend of the podcast, Andrew Brandt, drops by the show again this week to discuss the big game and the current state of the NFL.To listen to more Yahoo Finance Sports Report, click here.
