The Democratic National Convention (DNC) is kicking off Monday in Chicago, with President Biden expected to deliver a speech this evening as he passes the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris. Yahoo Finance Senior Columnist Rick Newman joins Morning Brief to break down what to expect from this election’s convention.
Newman highlights that candidates usually get a post-convention boost in the polls because of the prime-time coverage. While some political analysts think that Harris has risen enough already in the polls, others think she could rise even more after the convention.
Harris has already named her vice presidential running mate — Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D-Mn.) — and announced her economic agenda last week, however, Newman does not expect her to go further in-depth during the convention:
"If you’re focusing on wee details of policy proposals, that’s really not what the convention is for. The convention is to create good vibes, make it about your personalities, and for what it’s worth, I’m not sure Kamala Harris wants to talk that much about the economy." He notes that voters want to see plans to target food and housing prices, both of which Harris addressed in her economic agenda last week.
