As summer vacation kicks off with Memorial Day, US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg talks with Yahoo Finance executive editor Brian Sozzi about what consumers should expect from the busy travel season ahead and the latest developments regarding Boeing safety concerns.
TSA projections suggest the busiest summer travel season yet, putting pressure on airlines and airports to uphold timely flights and security checkpoints. Secretary Buttigieg says that during the busy holiday weekend, travelers should "allow a little extra time, make a plan, be patient, and "make sure you know your rights."
Buttigieg points to automatic refunds as a major improvement, saying: "If your flight gets canceled and you don’t fly, you don’t have to ask for your money back. It’s just going to come to you." He adds that the Department of Transportation will investigate any unrealistic airline schedule and already has reviews underway. "We want America’s airlines to succeed and thrive. We want them to do it by providing good customer service and through honest practices," he explains.
Boeing (BA) is facing a litany of issues, from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) investigation of its inspections of 787 Dreamliner jets to the Alaska Airlines (ALK) mid-flight door blowout.
"The good news is that there has been a lot of engagement. They’ve taken a number of steps in response to the pressure that the FAA is putting on them, but there’s still a long way to go," Sec. Buttigieg says. The FAA is is barring Boeing from increasing its production rate until the company has proven that it can address the mounting safety concerns. "At the end of the day, it’s all about the results. They’re saying the right things, they’re taking encouraging steps, but we need to make sure that we see it on the shop floor, that we see it in terms of the quality of the product that rolls off the line," he adds.
