As the April 15 tax filing deadline approaches in less than a week, many Americans have waited until the last minute to submit their returns. Jackson Hewitt Chief Tax Information Officer Mark Steber joins Wealth! to provide insights on what individuals need to know to get prepared.
Steber acknowledges that people opt to do their taxes later in the season for a variety of reasons, ranging from life issues to simply being afraid of owing the federal government. He notes that within the past week alone, 90 million Americans have filed.
Steber advises last-minute filers to "get a plan and start to act on that plan." He explains those filing late are "running a risk" of incurring various penalties, such as payment penalties, filing penalties, or interest. Steber encourages individuals to "decide what works" for them, but emphasizes the importance of acting "wisely and soon."
