In a scandalous move, a bill allowing the extension of lease agreements for 18 seaports operated by private companies without new tenders was passed in the Turkish parliament last week. As a result, favored companies will have an additional period of up to 19 years to operate the ports. Interestingly, a previous law proposing the same conditions was annulled by the Constitutional Court in August 2022 on the grounds of insufficient competition and a loss to the public.
Under Turkish law, the ownership of a seaport cannot be transferred to a private company.
The states wanting to keep Title 42 in place will argue on the merits in February 2023.

Ashland, Massachusetts – Dr. Jacquelyn Starer, 68, was arrested shortly before Christmas for assaulting a police officer during the January 6 Capitol protest.
According to the criminal complaint filed in DC, Starer illegally entered the Capitol through the East Rotunda Doors.
Bodycam footage provided by Metro PD showed Starer strike an officer shortly after 3:00 PM.
Dr. Starer was released on conditions.
She cannot leave the state of Massachusetts without notifying authorities.
Starer made her first court appearance ‘virtually’ on Tuesday.

Former Secretary of Transportation Eugene Scalia testified that former Attorney General Bill Barr advised him to resign from the Trump administration after the 2021 Capitol insurrection.
The exchange is documented in a transcript released by the House Jan. 6 committee on Tuesday.
Testifying under oath, Scalia said the administration “bore responsibility for what happened on Jan. 6th.”
On that day, a mob of Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to try to stop the certification of Joe Biden as president.

The Supreme Court sided with a group of Republican states asking that the Title 42 immigration policy remain in place until the court can hear the full arguments from the litigants.

Amazon is testing a drone delivery system in two cities after years of development.
Customers in Lockeford, California and College Station, Texas may now receive their package through Prime Air. Amazon’s goal is to deliver packages under 5 pounds within 60 minutes.
“The promise of drone delivery has often felt like science fiction, and we’ve been working for almost a decade to make it a reality,” Amazon said of the initiative in November. “When we first started Amazon Prime’s Two-Day Delivery program 17 years ago, it was considered revolutionary.
